Why (mission statement)

The R&D consortium aims to develop and implement a knowledge base and dedicated technology enabling a substantial increase of the biomass share in the cost-effective production of power and heat while maximising efficiency, minimising emissions and ensuring sustainable biomass use.

Not only biomass co-firing in existing fossil-fuel-fired power plants is considered, but also in new plants involving new conversion technologies aiming at higher overall efficiencies and a lower environmental impact. This includes application of Ultra Super Critical (USC) steam conditions, coal gasification and oxy-fuel coal combustion.

The R&D is conducted in close co-operation with the Dutch power sector to ensure that the R&D is well targeted to market needs and to facilitate the implementation and exploitation of the results. The consortium has a medium-to-long-term focus, but where possible, short-term application is sought.
